Melea - The Health Concept

This hotel is so stylish and impressive that our planned one-night stop turned into two. I’ve read some of the critical reviews, and I can’t quite agree with them. For us, pretty much everything during the stay was perfect.

We had no issues at all. The food was good, the hotel was quiet, and it was very clean. It seems quite new, too. There’s a small spot outside for smokers. Everyone did a great job, and I’d definitely come back.

The design is stunning, the garden is spacious, and the spa has good facilities. You can walk to the main local sights, and the front desk team were excellent. The porter was especially pleasant to deal with. A few things felt inconsistent, though. Our towels had hairs on them, the TV signal kept lagging or cutting out, and the shower head in the steam bath was faulty. The relaxation area is beside a loud overflow drain. Some listed juices weren’t available, and the breakfast pastries were stale. The dishes look great, but didn’t taste worth the price to me. In Budapest, main courses around 8-10K HUF can be fine dining quality, and this felt a tier below. Melea has an impressive look and a solid spa, but management needs to be more consistent to earn five stars.

The hotel and its concept have so much potential, which makes it all the more disappointing that the focus seems to be on quantity over quality. What we got was an expensive stay that left us needing a vacation to recover, not a relaxing break. The advertised warm, excellent service was mostly missing for us, except from a few staff members. A smile and a “good day” don’t make guests feel cared for. When we asked questions, we weren’t properly informed. Staff often didn’t know the answers or gave us wrong information, and things were forgotten, making simple matters unnecessarily complicated. We were left feeling as if it was our fault, or that we just didn’t understand because of a language barrier, when the real issue was that people weren’t listening or trying to understand. The organization was a complete mess. It all felt performative, including the supposed five-star experience. I can’t tell whether the people who gave this place five stars just haven’t experienced a true five-star hotel, or whether they were lucky. Either way, the service fell nowhere near what the hotel markets.
