Öreg Halász Hotel és Étterem

Clean, pleasant room, and the restaurant served excellent food with great service.

We were there in August with family and friends, all of us Hungarian, and had been really looking forward to eating there after the renovation. The food used to be really good. Sadly, the fish choices were disappointing: just three kinds of fillet prepared in different styles. I’d expected a whole fish cooked perfectly. The halaszle was the worst we’ve ever had. It was watery, full of paprika, and had only tiny pieces of fish. It felt as if it had come from the freezer and been reheated at the last minute. The large white plate it came on looked unappealing, and the meal just wasn’t enjoyable. It’s a real shame, because the building is beautiful and the kitchen needs a serious rethink.

The evening meal and breakfast were good, and the restaurant staff were excellent. We were staying here during a self guided cycle tour along euro velo route 6. The rooms were very basic and old, with ripped carpets, and the shared areas looked shabby too. I was also charged more than the rate in the hotel’s email confirmation.

After nearly a year and a half as a regular café customer, and previously a restaurant customer too, I’m done going there. I loved stopping by for coffee and the croissants from the breakfast counter. We always paid for the pastries separately with our coffees, without taking the full breakfast that costs over 3000ft. Now they’ve decided customers can’t eat pastries from the counter because the chefs won’t make extras. They only cook the exact number for the “paying breakfast guests” staying in the rooms. It’s disappointing that such a lovely café and hotel can’t take the extra step that would bring customers back, and the worst part is they don’t even seem to care. I’ll pay for coffee and croissants somewhere else, where all guests are made to feel welcome.
