Hableány Hotel

We didn’t eat lunch here, but the last time our family visited was 30 years ago for a holiday. It was lovely to feel a bit nostalgic and see the restaurant still open.

The location is lovely, in a quiet area with a view of the Tisza River, and the hotel has a decent bed and shower. There’s a modern TV in the room. We ate well at the restaurant, and breakfast was adequate too, apart from the coffee machine. Better to get coffee at the bar, it’s excellent! The staff are very friendly and helpful, and do their best to speak German and English. The hotel had an upgrade in 2013, but the interior still feels quite dated, with a retro look.

The conference setup was a mess. The room is narrow and very long, and the tables and chairs are decorated as if for a wedding. The projector looked ancient, the image was very dark, and either its lens or the screen was broken, which made some presentations hard to read. Maybe it was fine in the 90s, but not in 2025. I recently attended a conference here, and this hotel just isn’t suitable as a conference venue. It’s a shame that such an outrageously outdated, pro-life place thinks it can offer the right venue and infrastructure. I don’t know when this tasteless building complex was built, but to me it’s the most tasteless and disgusting one in Hungary. I’m trying to persuade the organizers not to bring us back.

The courtyard was enclosed and guarded, and the Gordon catfish dish was a fun idea that I enjoyed. Staff were nice, the room was spacious and clean, and the fish soup and carp fry were delicious. But the positives are outweighed by the problems. The place feels as old as a college from the socialist era, even though cleanliness was okay. Every door needed some special trick to close. The air conditioner in our room sounded like an industrial grinder, and with the window open we could hear drunken people bleating on the terrace until 2 am. The fish fillets tasted only of seasoning, breadcrumbs, and oil. Breakfast coffee was burnt and undrinkable from the machine, and the bread was poor quality. The white croissant couldn’t even be cut in half with a butter knife. The rest of the staff are clearly trying hard to make guests comfortable, but the place needs a good, knowledgeable manager and a major renovation.
