Tokajvár Hotel

Breakfast was included and really good, especially the homemade sweet cottage cheese pastries. The rooms were very clean and good value. We’d visited a winery in Tokay for the day and chose to stay in a more traditional hotel by the river. It’s under a ten-minute walk to the train station and about ten minutes on foot into the main town. I’d happily stay again.

Our train was delayed by an hour, so we just needed somewhere to rest our feet and charge our phones, not stay overnight. The receptionist was incredibly kind. He only speaks Hungarian, which may be useful for foreign tourists to know, but he offered us free coffee and let us sit in the breakfast room for an hour while we sorted out our day trip. If I come back to Tokaj, I’ll definitely look for this place’s hospitality again.

Some parts worked well, others didn’t. The building is nice, the room was large and everything was clean. A few staff were lovely, while others seemed like they’d simply turned up to work. We booked a double room described as having one large mattress, but it was actually two beds pushed together, which wasn’t couple-friendly. The shower gel was so watery it ran through my fingers, luckily I’d brought shampoo. There was also a loud mechanical noise at times during the night. I used to live beside a busy road, so it didn’t bother me, but it could bother others. The safe didn’t work, and we couldn’t set the thermostat below 25°C. We didn’t raise these things with reception because she hadn’t been helpful at check-in. She told us breakfast ran until 10, but a sign in the breakfast room said 9:30. At 9:20 there wasn’t much food left, though the kitchen lady came out and asked everyone if they wanted more, saying they’d be happy to cook. That was a really nice touch. There’s no tea or coffee setup in the room, which is acceptable, but no room service either for anyone wanting coffee first thing. We paid 21,000 forint, about €68, and given the shortcomings and lack of service, I’d look around before booking.

The rooms were clean, breakfast was good, and it’s seven minutes from the old town.
