Hunguest Hotel Freya

Freya Hotel doesn't include access to Thermal World, which was the one real drawback for me. The place is clearly dated, with an 80s feel, but it's very clean and the food is tasty. Dinner service costs half what it does at RB hotel, and we still had a good time.

There aren't any wellness services at the hotel itself, though guests do get a free pass to the Zalakaros bath for the whole stay. The building looks pretty depressing from outside, while the interior keeps its original retro style in good condition. Rooms were clean, especially the bathroom and toilet, with no mold, and the staff were friendly and helpful. The food was decent rather than special, but they made a custom menu for allergies, which was great. The air coolers and bathroom and toilet fans were very old and loud. It was an okay stay, but we may try another hotel next time for comparison.

Food was inconsistent, one evening quite poor and the next good, so I'd call the stay average. The staff were friendly, though most spoke German and didn't know English. The building could use some updating. It's convenient for visiting Granit spa, since a tunnel connects it to the hotel.

The room felt like a small, dirty box, with worn carpet that seemed sticky, and the bed left me aching badly when I woke up. There was no proper ventilation, and the balcony door had poor insulation. Rooms at the ends of the corridors are best avoided. Half board didn't include soft drinks at dinner, which cost extra. The price felt made up. I paid about €190 a night for a three-star hotel, roughly what a clean, bright apartment twice the size would cost at a four-star place. After one awful night I moved to another hotel, but they refused to return the extra booking money. They said they could sell the room to someone else and suggested I ask for a better one. If better rooms are available, they should sell those first. I'd never pay more than necessary upfront again, since that money may be gone for good. I paid and regretted it. The reception plaque proudly says the hotel was one of the best in 2007, but that was 15 years ago. This place is a scam.
