They wouldn’t let us see the room before booking, and the staff member wasn’t friendly. I’ve traveled for over eight years across 40 countries and stayed in dozens of places in Indonesia, and this was the first time that had happened to me. We left and found somewhere else. They also quoted a higher price on the spot than the online booking price.

The Superior room was spacious, tidy, clean and felt homey, and everything worked well: the fridge, coffee and tea maker, TV, AC and hot water. Staff were friendly, and the service was pretty good for a homestay or hostel. The card lock system was like what you see in a big hotel. I stayed one night and was very comfortable. Around Bangbarung there are plenty of places to eat within walking distance, so it’s easy to explore different food options. Finding Applewood can be tricky, though. It’s on the main road, but the sign isn’t eye-catching, and the only front door is tucked right beside Roti Unyil Venus. The bathroom door was a little jammed against the floor, and there was a crack in the glass door handle that looked like it could break at any time. For the price, though, the service and facilities were excellent. If you need an affordable place for a longer stay, Applewood is worth considering.

I’d come to see friends and was surprised to find a little hotel or hostel in that area. It took me two tries to spot it because the sign isn’t very visible. Still, it was decent enough for a short stay.

Good value, just be careful with kids because there are no railings on the stairs.
