The rooms are fairly simple, with basic facilities and modest furnishings, so this may not suit someone looking for luxury. But if you care more about location and scenery, Gopalan Borobudur is well worth considering. It’s a charming, intimate hotel with lush rice paddies right beside it and a volcano visible in the distance on a clear day. Watching the sunrise light up the sky over the fields and volcanic silhouette was unforgettable. Borobudur Temple complex is just across a wall, making it easy to visit at sunrise before the crowds arrive.

The hotel’s best feature is its location, close enough that you can see the peak of Borobudur Stupa. It’s a small place with few rooms, and parking is just enough for the guests, with some creative rush-hour juggling in the morning. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Breakfast is ordered à la carte rather than served buffet style, and there’s a small pool for children.

A quiet hotel in a strategic spot near Borobudur Temple. The rooms have Javanese ethnic design, the service is friendly and efficient, and breakfast is enjoyable with the natural scenery around you.

The countryside setting beside a rice field gives you a real Javanese experience, a lovely look, and crickets and frogs to listen to at night. There are tradeoffs with a rustic hotel like this, though: the WiFi can be pretty spotty, and I noticed a few bugs here and there. If you want a sterile room and fast internet, you could stay in the city or at home.
