We chose a Nakula room for my wife and me at this budget homestay on the slope of Mt. Merbabu. The view takes in Mt. Merapi, Mt. Bibi, Selo center, and Sanjaya Hills. It’s also close to the popular cafes Merapi Garden and Langit Pitu, and the Gancik basecamps for climbing Mt. Merbabu. Our weekday rate was IDR 200,000.-. The room had a double bed, clean towels, a simple table, two bottles of mineral water, toothbrushes and toothpaste, two bars of soap, and a flat-screen TV with decent reception on a few free channels. Its small private bathroom was clean and had a good hot shower, mirror, clothes hanger, and Western-style toilet with a bidet jet. Slightly smaller Sadewa rooms cost the same, IDR 200,000.- on weekdays or IDR 225,000.- on weekends. A family room for six is IDR 400,000.- on weekdays and IDR 450,000.- on weekends. Cash only, and there’s no breakfast. Staff were friendly and helpful when they were around. There’s a shared drinking water dispenser, an emergency check-in desk, motorbike parking under shelter, and a yard for cars. Service is available only from 08:00 a.m. to 06:00 p.m., and WhatsApp messages got slow or no replies. There’s no electric kettle, free tea, coffee or sugar, sink, shampoo, or balcony. There wasn’t a chair until we asked for one, and the free WiFi was slow. The LPG for the shower ran out after midnight. I sent a WhatsApp message, got no answer, and it was fixed too late.
