Thomas' Retreat Bukit Lawang

We weren’t keen on the snake excursion with the “snake whisperer.” It was extremely expensive and didn’t feel worth it for what you get to see. The two-day trek, on the other hand, was outstanding. Our guides spoke good English and knew a lot, and the trek food was outstanding too. It was a 10/10 experience. The retreat is quiet and within walking distance of pretty much everything, and Thomas was personable, helpful, and added a personal touch. A couple of things didn’t work for us. In a place where plastic is a problem, there seemed to be no way to get boiled water, so you have to buy bottled water. The kettle’s cord was so short that you had to stand there holding it while it boiled. When we asked staff for boiled water, they said we had to buy bottled water. Apart from that, we loved our stay and recommend the place. It was a wonderful experience!

I can hear loud live music from your place right now. I have a headache and can’t sleep, and from what I’ve heard it may go on until 3 a.m. Lack of sleep makes my arrhythmia much worse. Fireworks in the middle of the night have already woken my son too. I’m relieved we aren’t staying at your place. If I’d known about the noise, I would have chosen accommodation farther away. My family and I have been in Bukit Lawang for several days and have truly enjoyed our time here. We thought we’d come back, but this music has left us with a very unpleasant last impression. We won’t return. It’s very disappointing. The party happens every Saturday, so I’d suggest avoiding Saturdays if you want a quieter stay.

I had a terrible night and couldn’t sleep. The mattress was good, and the bathroom was nice with warm water. But the bed was very noisy, the air conditioning only worked halfway because there’s an open window above the door, and a bright bathroom light shone right in my face all night. I also think 70€ for a one-day jungle trek is way overpriced in a country where people earn 7€ a day.

Thomas was really friendly and communication with him was super easy. The room was very spacious, with a comfortable bed, and the location was beautiful. If we come back, we’d definitely do a jungle tour with Thomas' retreat. We highly recommend this place! :)
