The room was in awful shape: stains and brown marks everywhere, cigarette butts and rubbish on the wardrobe by the entrance, and hair in both the toilet and on the bed. I counted six long women’s hairs on the bed, which made me think the room hadn’t been cleaned. There was no toilet paper, and no sink either, so washing your face or brushing your teeth meant using the shower. Huge cockroaches were in the room. I’m used to geckos from living in Bali, but cockroaches are another matter. Getting there was a hassle too. Google Maps showed the wrong spot, and I spent half an hour searching in dark alleys even though it was only a three-minute walk away. The search area was large, and none of the phone numbers I found worked. Nearby, an Islamic mosque or something had prayers blaring constantly. I’d booked and paid ahead, but the man at reception and the other employees didn’t understand English. He tried to sell me a room, and it took ten minutes to explain I’d already paid for one. After registration, they wouldn’t give my passport back. I thought that was against the law, and only got it after criticizing them harshly. I’ve never been this outraged. Absolutely no one should stay here.
