Hollow Tree's Resort

I stayed longer than planned and still didn’t want to leave. Even near the end, I was enjoying the big menu, and the staff were kind and accommodating. A real gem in the Mentawai, and a must for surfers, families, or travelers looking for that paradise island life.

As a solo woman traveling, I felt looked after at HT’s. The community is caring and kind, people seemed to watch out for one another, and I never forgot how ready everyone was to help. Liam and Emma are wonderful, and Teiki and Sina are the best owners. I had such a good time and can’t wait to return to Hollow Trees. The island power cuts happen pretty often, so having a backup generator was a big relief. I didn’t have to worry about spending the night without AC or losing wifi. My room was comfortable, and the restaurant had a varied menu with delicious food. Getting around was a treat too. The boat rides included with the stay felt like great value, with time to relax and enjoy the scenery. There are also motorbikes to take out on your own, which I recommend for exploring the beautiful beaches around the island. The rental board selection was great. I liked one so much that I bought it, haha!

Such a friendly, relaxed atmosphere, and lovely people all around ❤️. The food and service were amazing too. I wish I could stay here next year. Love it :)

The restaurant staff were friendly, and the location works well for advanced surfers who can handle a competitive crowd. But after staying at other Mentawais resorts, we found Hollow Tree Resort a big disappointment. Its online image promises much more than the actual stay, which felt like a very overpriced hostel. The place has aged a lot. I held off posting this until the resort emailed me asking for a review. Our room was basic, and the sheets were dirty when we arrived. Showering was almost impossible because the water smelled strongly of rotten eggs, indoors and out. We used the pool instead. Its water looked greenish, but at least it smelled of chlorine. On top of that, a friend got severe food poisoning from the restaurant. The atmosphere felt tense, as if surfers were sizing each other up instead of enjoying the great wave right in front of them. For a range of waves, you also need to be willing to ride a scooter over puddles and direct roads. The walkable waves all depend on the same wind and swells. I left early and won’t be back.
