Smooth Garden

Smooth Garden accom is actually behind Cookies coffee shop, not where the map puts it. It's a locally owned and run place in a quiet area, with clean, comfortable rooms that felt pretty luxurious for two budget travelers like us. The beach is a short walk away, and it's easy to get around the island by bike or taxi. Great coffee, too.

The staff were friendly, and the houses have air conditioning. If nobody is at reception when you arrive, just ask at the nearby cafe. We found the house quite nice for a couple of days. The downside was salty water from both the tap and shower, though I know that's not unusual on the islands. The towels and bathrobes were poorly washed, and I think the lack of fresh water may be the reason.

The place is somewhat secluded, so the nights were peaceful, which I really enjoyed. The atmosphere was easygoing and laid back. There's no swimming pool, but with beaches nearby and so many water activities to do, a pool seems more like decoration, or a way for resorts to charge extra. The aircon worked really well for me, and so did the wifi. The soundproofing could be better: noise from a neighbor can disturb your sleep. Staff were very friendly and helpful. They made the bed and cleaned the room daily, though they didn't change the sheets. For anyone visiting the island, it's not the most developed place, but that's part of its charm. Lower your expectations a little and you'll probably enjoy your stay more.

Thanks especially to John, who came over right away to check on me and help when I hurt my foot in a nasty fall. The rooms were clean and not expensive, and the restaurant and bar next door is great for food. I'd definitely come back!
