Djoglo Luxury Bungalow

Dinner by the pool was a highlight. I had the Thai-style steamed fish and it was super. The staff were friendly and pleasant, too. The resort looks out over the Golf course, and the spacious modern room had a big comfortable bed, a creatively designed bathroom, and quality towels. Breakfast was disappointing, though: very little choice, and I was told I had to order the full breakfast to get coffee.

I’ve visited Malang quite often, yet only recently discovered this distinctive hotel, even though it has been open for almost 10 years. It sits inside Araya township, at the same location as Djati Lounge. There are just 10 rooms, and the limited facilities could make a stay of more than one night feel boring. Still, the place has a refreshing atmosphere and cool air. The rooms have a charming look, with large structures, high ceilings, and nearly 360-degree glass windows. Djoglo refers to a traditional Javanese house, and the design gives it a luxurious djoglo feel. The bathroom reminded me of a typical Balinese villa in Ubud.

I’ve stayed at Djoglo Luxury Bungalow three times now, and it has been very well maintained since my first visit in 2015. The 10 bungalows have local motifs and sit among really picturesque landscapes. It’s a comfortable, modern place overlooking the Golf course, with spacious rooms, comfortable beds, and cleverly designed bathrooms. The staff are polite and friendly. Great for a family gathering or a short, relaxing break. I’d definitely come back.

The evenings here were so peaceful. We arrived in heavy rain, and could hear frogs and who knows what else as nature came alive. It felt really comfortable. Housekeeping and security were helpful and friendly, and the free minibar was a nice surprise, especially the Susu Ultra in the chiller. We got the last Garden View Room for the weekend, with everything else booked up, and the stay exceeded our expectations. Check-in was quick and efficient. The deposit for this particular room was IDR 1.500.000, a little higher than usual, but seemed reasonable given the wood used in the bungalows, so bring cash or a credit card. One tip: pack what you need before nightfall. Especially in the rainy season, leaving the area can be a hassle, and Gojek drivers are hard to find at night in the rain.
