Mercure Pangkalan BUN

The poolside restaurant was the one letdown. Staff weren’t always there, and we sometimes waited quite a while for our orders, which got annoying. Otherwise, we felt very welcome during our four nights here, from 6-10 Sept. Everyone was friendly and helpful. Rustandi cleaned our room well each day, and one day surprised us with cute towel animals and a kind note. At the downstairs restaurant, Mr. Saiful was especially attentive and always ready to help. Our room on the 7th floor, number 719, faced the park, so there was hardly any street noise. It was spacious, with good amenities, complimentary tea and coffee bags, and a water dispenser in the hallway where we could refill our bottle jug. The location was convenient too, not far from the airport. A comfortable place to stay, especially after time in the jungle! ;-)

We went to the lounge bar for food and drinks, but the service was awful. Each time we wanted to order, we had to go to the lobby and track down a waiter. Then they added a 10% service charge to the bill. A rotten hotel, not worth even one star.

The food had lots of good choices, from Indonesian dishes to Western ones. The room was immaculate, and when I reported a problem with it, the service was quick. I’d have enjoyed the room more with a smart TV. From an upper floor, if you get lucky, the views over the neighborhood and surrounding nature are lovely. The pool was fine, though not very deep, and the gym is very basic. There’s a local shopping area about 300 meters away with plenty of snacks and drinks, but no alcoholic drinks, as you’d expect in a Muslim-majority country. I’d rate it 4.5/5 if I could, but the system wouldn’t let me, or I couldn’t figure out how. So 5/5 feels fair, especially here in Pangkalan Bun.
