Ratan Hotel Uluwatu

The pool was lovely and clean, and the rooms were cleaned every day. Staff were well trained and genuinely kind. They also arranged safe scooter pick-up and drop-off. Amazing value for money!

We left without staying, after booking three nights at Ratan at short notice when plans for my husband’s and my Bali trip changed. We only wanted a reasonably priced place in Uluwatu to sleep between beach days, so we weren’t looking for fancy facilities. But we couldn’t stay in either room we were given. I checked into room 109 in the early afternoon and immediately noticed a musty, damp smell. The bathroom was below standard, with mould, mildew, and a smell from the drain. That seemed like something I might manage for the price, and I assumed airing the room would help. But after returning later and spending more than half an hour inside, the smell became hard to tolerate. There were two air fresheners in the room, which I’d first mistaken for mosquito spray. I then saw another review that specifically described room 109 as being in a dire state. We had booked three nights, so I asked staff to move us. They first said nothing was available. When I explained I couldn’t stay in that room, they prepared room 209, directly above 109. It was after 9pm when we went up to look, and construction workers were still on the roof, throwing concrete off the sides. That was extremely dangerous. Room 209 smelled better, though it was heavily perfumed, perhaps to cover the damp smell. Its bathroom was in very rough condition, worse than the one in 109. I wondered if a roof leak was being repaired and causing these problems, but that may just be wishful thinking. At almost 10pm, the last thing I wanted was to find somewhere else and repack our bags, but we had no choice. Neither room was habitable. It’s completely unacceptable to check us in when they knew about the roof issue and complaints about room 109. The staff were reasonable once I raised it. After spending over 30 minutes on the phone with management, they gave me a full cash refund because I didn’t want to wait for a credit card refund. Management has not contacted me or apologized. The location also isn’t good. You’ll need a scooter or Gojek/taxi to get anywhere if you decide to risk booking. BEWARE!!!

The pool area was cozy and the property was quiet, so I still enjoyed our stay. Everyone on staff was really nice and helpful. The rooms were clean, though I didn’t like the washroom smell and the AC didn’t seem cold enough.

The kids loved staying here, and so did we. The pools were excellent, and we enjoyed the restaurant and breakfast. After more than 10 years of traveling in Indonesia, that was the best bacon we’ve ever had there!
