Kundalini Beach Houses

We’re definitely coming back. After more than four years on Bali, Kundalini is one of my favorite places to stay there. The house and gardens feel calm from the moment you enter, and the path through the garden leads straight to the beach, where the water is quiet enough for swimming. The staff were wonderful. Ibu kadek cooked brilliantly, and ibu dini helped with everything I asked for. Being able to bring my dog made the stay even more special. I loved unwinding by the pool and at Bale bengong, just listening to the waves. The house is spacious, beautiful, and looks out over the ocean. Ilu, one of the cooks, made delicious Indonesian food, and the staff were so friendly. It was a really good stay, and I’d happily return or recommend it to anyone wanting a quiet, different side of Bali.

The view and setting are fantastic, and the manager really knows her job. With motorbikes, you can explore northern Bali, from Munduk to the national park in the west, with plenty of waterfalls and temples along the way. The local market is about 10 minutes away. But the villa itself needs a lot of attention. There was so much chlorine in the pool that it hurt our skin. One bathroom had no hot water, one toilet in the middle of the house leaked, and another wouldn't flush. Two of the four bathrooms are open to the sky, which is lovely for sun and stars, but after dark they fill with mosquitoes. Doors wouldn't close properly, and we didn't really click with our cook/maid. The place was dusty, including the plants and cupboards. The staff try to clean the beach, but each tide brings plastic, shoes, and clothes back in. Swimming or snorkeling in front of the villa wasn't an option. The location is still great, though.

It's tucked away, but the Balinese warmth and hospitality are still there. You can also go out to see dolphins by hiring a local boat with a fisherman. The food they serve is delicious, which matters a lot to me. Kundalini Villa is a lovely choice if you want somewhere quiet and soothing. You can hear the waves from inside, and I spent a whole day sleeping in the little Bali house in the backyard. The villa's name brings yoga to mind, and the place really does feel peaceful.
