It's on the far west side of Yogyakarta, but Tugu Monument and Malioboro Street, the main shopping street, are only a 10-minute ride away. The area is quiet, so I slept well, and there are plenty of affordable places to eat nearby.

I stayed with my family and it was pretty awful. There was a damp wall, a thumb-sized insect behind the wardrobe, and the bathroom was dirty. Then, at 00.26 in the middle of the night, the power went out. WORST.
