This was my second stay, and it was pleasant overall. The limited parking space is handled neatly by the security team, so kudos to them. A few things could be improved. The air conditioner is too noisy and should be fixed. Smoking rooms should have windows that open. Also, it seems wasteful to replace towels every day when guests leave them on the rack, especially for stays longer than three nights. For the same reason, maybe bottled mineral water could be replaced with a jug and a dispenser in the corridor, which might also save money.

Jalan Gajah Mada puts the Grand Orchid Hotel Solo right in the middle of the city's cultural life. It’s only a short walk from the main Slamet Riyadi thoroughfare, so it’s easy to mix a relaxing stay with time exploring Javanese heritage.

An older hotel, but the parquet floor in the deluxe room was nice. Breakfast was simple, toast with butter and jam, a rice dish, and fruit. It had what I needed as a base for checking out Solo’s food, culture, history, and markets.

The reception didn’t tell us there were two separate buildings, one new and one old. The old-style hotel needs maintenance and renovations: the walls were nearly coming apart, there was mold everywhere, the bathroom door wouldn’t close, and a broken plug was dangerous for a child. We arrived at 4 PM to a complete blackout. I couldn’t believe there was no generator for a situation like that. The elevator had stopped too, and I hoped nobody was trapped inside.

It’s a decent budget option for friends or family, with good ventilation and a clean, comfortable bed. The shower and toilet weren’t working as well as I expected, though. The toilet wouldn’t flush properly and the shower head was clogged.
