The hotel sent a welcome message on WhatsApp straight away, and I appreciated the ginger tea when we arrived. We’d shown up early without warning, but they still gave us a clean ocean-view room on the 5th floor. A security deposit is required, by card or cash, and the watchman carried our bags up. Bring an international adapter. There’s a lot packed into the room: two very comfortable single beds, TV, lamp, phone, mini fridge, tall mirror, safe, and a tea and coffee tray with a thermos and jug. There’s also a coffee table with a chair and an extra seat. The WC and shower sit beside each other behind a shared swinging door. Dental kit, hand soap, and shower gel cum shampoo were provided. The water in the shallow pool was warm, but the pool bar was never manned. The unsecured Wi-Fi was patchy, and breakfast felt low budget. All in all, Ion Hotel Benoa is a good budget-friendly choice.

I found the rooftop especially relaxing in the late afternoon. The gym was clean and not too busy, and the staff were friendly and helpful. There’s also an Italian restaurant right across the way and a minimarket a short walk off.

A minimarket close by is really handy, and after a day of watersports you can unwind on the rooftop or head to the gym. The hotel is a great base for trying the activities in Benoa, with the beach and activity centers nearby.

We made the 40-minute drive to ION Hotel because Booking.com showed rooms with proper beds as available. When we got there, Agus, the receptionist/manager, said there were no rooms available at all, even though the listings were still up on Booking. We were tired after the trip and ended up without a place to stay. Nobody offered a solution. The hotel and Booking.com clearly weren’t coordinated, and the online information wasn’t accurate. It was frustrating and unprofessional to have our time wasted like that. I wouldn’t rely on the availability shown online for this hotel.

The kids were happy with the pool, and we all had a wonderful time together. I booked four rooms for one night for family and friends. The rooms were spacious, the amenities were great, the shower was hot, and the AC got properly cold.
