The area around Rumah Surga Villa is lovely, with peaceful walks through rice paddies and plenty of cute, tasty Warungs nearby. It’s tucked down a little dirt path, away from traffic, and feels very quiet. You can’t drive a car right up to it, so you’ll need to walk or ride a scooter, but it isn’t far. Central Ubud is within 10 minutes, though that can take longer in busy months with more tourists. I’ve stayed here twice for months at a time, and would happily stay forever if I could. Illuh and her family run the place, and they’re incredibly kind, generous, attentive, and always ready to help. Each villa has its own walled-off private space and pool, plus the amenities you need. There are lots of dogs, so it may not suit you if you’re not a dog person. If you love animals, though, it’s paradise. The partly outdoor spaces do get little visitors like ants and lizards. That’s common all over Bali, and I find it part of the charm. The villa itself is peaceful and secluded.

This is a stylish retreat that feels like a comfortable home, somewhere between basic and ultra-luxury. We came with our team for the second time, and the host family are delightful. They’re helpful and accommodating, while still giving you complete privacy. Iluh has become a friend over the past year, and cooks a delicious breakfast for guests every day, served in the villa. The villa is private and tucked away in a local village just outside Ubud. It has two comfortable double bedrooms, each with a fully private open-air bathroom, a semi-outdoor living room with a full kitchen, and a lush garden with a pegoda and sundeck with loungers. And the pool is epic, all yours. They can arrange airport pickup and drop-off, and provide drivers for the roughly 8-minute trips into Ubud and back. The family also owns a one-bedroom pool villa, two restaurants, including Sami Warung, and a top-notch Tattoo studio. Ubud is a relaxed spot in Bali’s highlands with great food, coffee, and spas. Seniman Coffee Studio is one of the best coffee roasters around and a daily must-visit.

Ketut and Iluh were lovely hosts, very kind and always ready to help, and Iluh made delicious breakfasts. The villa has its own pool and kitchenette, and was excellent.

The owners are quite helpful, and the property has a nice private swimming pool. It’s a bit far from the main road, though, so getting there is difficult.
