Warji House 2 Bisma

The room felt completely insecure. You could undo the lock just by pulling the handle and open the door whenever you wanted. It was also filthy. There was human waste left on the toilet from the previous guests, the bath looked revolting and as if it hadn’t been cleaned in years, and cockroaches crawled around all day. You could step on one and hear a crunch. The sewage stench from the bathroom was gagging and spread into the bedroom. There was no water or towels when we arrived, though they did bring them later. Food residue was scattered over the floor, drawing Ubud insects in, and the sheets were unwashed with mysterious white marks. The old AC pushed out dust, and we slept in the heat to avoid sinus problems. Mould and damp were everywhere. The place felt like a health and safety hazard with no hygiene standards. When we raised all this with management, they said we could leave that day or stay, and offered no other solution. They were extremely poor at handling the problems. This is the most horrible place I’ve ever set foot in. I felt like a caveman sleeping in a filthy Bali ‘temple’. I’d rather eat soil for a day than spend one at the Warji Bisma. Do not go.

A dubious place. They forgot our reservation, put us in the wrong room, then tried to make us leave halfway through our stay. The rooms are dark, cleaning is infrequent and poor, and the staff act strangely. Maybe tolerable for a couple of nights if there are no better options. The room was gloomy even on a sunny day, and the bulbs barely lit it. Fungus and mold were everywhere. The Wi-Fi was awful and wouldn’t even let me send an email for three days. Bedding and bathroom were dirty. Pool water was sour and muddy, and pigeon droppings stayed on the loungers for days. The staff didn’t know how to treat guests. There was no safe, the room had a ridiculously tiny padlock, and the rusty locks inside the room and bathroom wouldn’t close without more force than an ordinary person could manage. We had booked a double bed and mosquito net two months ahead. Two weeks before we arrived, they said those rooms had somehow all gone, and offered an older room with separate beds and no net for the same price, saying they could provide a fumigator. At reception they couldn’t figure out who we were or what to do with us. We were eventually checked in, but they didn’t provide the fumigator and said I could buy one myself. Halfway through the stay, a worker said our room had been rented to someone else and we had to leave. They were rude, offered a refund for the unused days, and seemed surprised when we objected. I’ve kept coming back to Warji Bisma 2 whenever I visit Bali, ever since 2004. I must have spent over 200 nights there by now. It isn’t a five-star hotel, but it is a small, warm, clean and comfortable place, and the lovely pool is a real plus. The location in Ubud works well, especially for friendly guests. The owners and their two capable employees, Ketut and Koman, do their best to make you feel at home.

The location was handy for restaurants and sightseeing, and there’s a great laundry next door, though that business isn’t connected to Warji House. We also booked the Mount Batur morning trek through them, and that was a highlight of our time in Bali, but I can’t credit Warji House for the trek itself. The room had a strong sewage smell coming from the bathroom as soon as we arrived. We asked the staff to deal with it, but they said they weren’t willing to fix it and told us to cancel. That wasn’t fair, especially at the last minute when we hadn’t expected the room to be in that state. After we raised it again, they “cleaned” the bathroom with bleach, which should have been done before we arrived. There was mould on many walls, and a cockroach showed up too. A faulty light or socket sparked when switched on and cut the power. Security was poor: there was no inside lock, just a padlock and key on the handles, but it could slide through a gap and the door still opened. Look somewhere else. I can’t recommend this place.
