The central location and soft mattress, which had no bedbugs, were the only good parts of this stay. A friend and I spent three nights here, and the rooms were dirty, with stained sheets and a bad smell. The bathroom was a foul, sewer-smelling mess with almost no ventilation, and ants were everywhere. After our 26-hour trip, we were woken early on the first day, before the time we had agreed on, so they could offer us their driver. We later found the price was inflated. Breakfast was included. The first morning’s Nasi Goreng was really tasty, but when we asked for breakfast to take away the next day, they said it would take 1.30 hours to prepare. What we got was a packet of industrial buns and two waters. On the following day, they didn’t prepare anything at all, even though we’d asked again. Paying this much for what felt like a nightmare was awful.

Staying inside the palace area makes it easy to reach Keraton, and there are lots of food stalls nearby. The rooms are just right for a comfortable night, and they serve a local-style breakfast in front of them. The workers are really hostile. If you like historical things, there are some here, along with old books that are gold despite their age.

I caught an employee red-handed taking our valuables from the room after he’d lied and said he needed to check the bathroom. We couldn’t find any other employees to complain to. I wouldn’t recommend this guesthouse to anyone.

They treated us like family, and I loved the atmosphere. The one issue was that there was no hot water early in the morning.

The receptionist seemed to know nothing when we asked him questions. In the morning, when we were leaving the hotel, we lost one night. He only admitted someone had entered the room after I pointed it out, though at least nothing was stolen. We’d left the air conditioning on, but when we returned it was off and a light was on, so someone had been in the room. The cleaning was bad too: there were other people’s hairs in the bathroom and even in the bed. Disgusting.
