A hidden Victorian house by the sea, with a grand estate and a tiny Irish pub tucked out back. What a wonderful find on Achill Island, and a must visit! The hostel was well furnished, and I had a comfortable night’s rest. I was really impressed. Breakfast was generous, too, making for a wholesome stay.

I’ve been visiting this historic manor for over 30 years, and it’s lovely to see The Valley House returning to its former splendour while keeping its welcoming feel. Once a traditional hostel, the house has been beautifully transformed, with boutique hotel comfort alongside that friendly, communal hostel spirit. Alice’s colourful, artistic decor gives the private rooms in the main house a stylish, eclectic feel without losing the historic character. Breakfast is a generous continental spread with Irish soda bread, served in the stately dining room, which becomes a restaurant at night. There’s excellent food in the pub and on the adjoining patio, too. Guests can also use the cottage-style kitchen in the old stables, where Pat and Alice have placed Ireland’s most famous table.

Pat, the owner, was FABULOUS, so kind and welcoming, with hospitality through the roof. The bar was incredible, and the traditional music that happened to be on that night was amazing. My boyfriend and I found this gem after deciding to stay another night in Achill, and it did NOT disappoint. The room was spacious, with super high ceilings, a comfy bed, and a clean, roomy bathroom. Such a lovely surprise at the end of our time on the island. Don’t skip staying here, or stopping in for a pint or two or three. Thanks again, Pat!! 💚🤍🧡

We had a great meal on Saturday night, followed by plenty of singing and beers in the Bar. Eliza greeted us and was absolutely brilliant, sharing lots of local knowledge. We came with my wife and our friends for a weekend break on August 22nd and 23rd. The house is beautiful, the rooms are spacious, the beds are really comfy, and the shower was great. Would definitely recommend, and we’ll be back.

We were staying in Dooagh when we came across The Valley House. Stopped in for a few pints and a chat. Absolutely class place, with extremely friendly service. We’ll try the accommodation and food on our next visit.
