Glencarrig Farmhouse B&B

We used Glencarrig Farmhouse as a base for exploring the Loop Head peninsula, and it was ideally placed for hikes and local sights. The countryside setting had ocean views, and the B&B was clean and comfortable, with large rooms and a nice bathroom. The owners were lovely hosts, and Mary made delicious breakfasts with homemade bread and jams. She also offers a cooking class. The Loop Head cliffs hike and Ross Bridge are well worth seeing. We preferred the hike to the very touristy Cliffs of Moher, and saw seals at both places.

Mary made everything easy from the time we arrived until we left. Breakfast was just right, with a full Irish and pancakes, all homemade. It’s a quiet spot away from the road. Some other guests were a little noisy, but it didn’t affect our stay. I’d give it six stars if I could.

The setting is lovely, and the nearby Bridges of Ross and Kilkee Cliffs were every bit as impressive as the Cliffs of Moher to me, with hardly anyone around. The B&B is also close to landmarks people often overlook. Glencarrig had the most comfortable bed of our whole Ireland trip, a fresh and excellent breakfast, and a game room with darts and billiards. The owner was friendly and full of local knowledge. It is somewhat remote, though, with few places for food or fuel in Glencarrig. You can find both within a 30-minute drive, but if Long Dock is closed, it may be best to eat before you arrive. For exploring the quieter Loop Head peninsula on Ireland’s Atlantic coast, it’s a great place to stay.

I’ve stayed here three times this week, and each visit has been just as good. Mary keeps everything as neat as before, and welcomed me back with tea and cake. When she knows you have a busy day ahead, she even sends you off with a little bag of cake. On my first stay, I loved the room overlooking the Shannon estuary and the powerful hot shower, which was better than most hotels. Mary’s breakfasts are the best part, especially the best pancakes I’ve ever had. This is a beautiful, secluded spot on the Loop Head peninsula, and I highly recommend it.
