The Western Strands Hotel

The pub downstairs had good food and entertainment on most nights, and the location is the best in town. My room was basic, as expected, but the bed was very comfortable, the shower and toilet worked properly, and there was plenty of space to hang clothes. The tea and coffee facilities were great too. For a single room, it was excellent value. I stayed a few days last week and honestly can't think of anywhere better in the EU for the same price. The owners and staff couldn't have done more for me. We had to track someone down from the restaurant when we first arrived, then they charged us, handed over the key, and disappeared. Later, we had to find them again about a filthy kettle and a toilet that wasn't working properly. They fixed those problems, but showed no interest in making our stay pleasant. We even had to look for someone again the next day to check out. The rooms feel like an afterthought, with little effort put into them even though they bring in money. The place is dated, which might be acceptable if it weren't so expensive. We booked because of the good reviews, but it seems those are for the restaurant. The service and cleanliness were both poor.

People were smoking just inside the entrance, so the smell got onto our clothes and into the hall. We could also hear noise from the dining room while trying to sleep. The room was outdated, with a rusty sink drain, and the one-night stay felt expensive for what we got. Looking at the positive reviews, most seem to be about the restaurant and food.

We had such a fun night at Western Strands after the live music drew us in for our first visit. At Martina's retirement party, everyone welcomed us like old friends, and we danced and laughed. We came back for dinner the next day and enjoyed it. The party atmosphere was gone by then, but the pub music was still decent. If I end up in Belmullet again, I'll return.
