Avlon House Bed & Breakfast

We didn't have a car, so getting to the train station or downtown Carlow meant a bit of a walk, though it's manageable if mobility isn't an issue. The B&B itself is charming, with clean, comfortable rooms that have everything you need. Tom, the owner, was welcoming and always ready to help, and breakfast had enough choice that you'll leave full. We'd stay at the Avalon again if we're back around here.

Tom was so helpful throughout our visit, and the room was arranged well with everything we needed. It's about a ten-minute walk back into town. We'd definitely stay here again.

Getting around on foot was easy for us. Carlow Train Station took about 13 minutes, Carlow Coach Park bus station about 16, and Carlow College roughly 17. The routes were level and very well lit at night. We were here to visit my daughter at Carlow College (St. Patrick's), and Avlon House made a comfortable base. Our room was roomy for two and could have fit a third person; the beds were comfortable, the bathroom modern, and it had that homey feel. The house stayed quiet during the day, with hardly any street noise at night. Our breakfast choices, made the evening before, were delicious and brought out by the host, who was gracious, welcoming, and gave us useful tips on places to see around Carlow. I'd recommend Avlon House for its kind host, comfort, and handy location.

I was especially pleased to find proper towels instead of the scratchy kind you sometimes get in hotels. We had plenty of off-street parking, and the stay felt exactly like the Irish B&B experience we wanted. Tom also pointed us toward some good places to eat. It's easy to walk into the town center and choose from several restaurants. After seeing some pricey hotels in Kilkenny that didn't look too appealing, I came across this well-reviewed B&B in Carlow. The nearly five-star average feels deserved.
