This was the worst place I’ve ever stayed. The owner, Jerry, was helpful at first, though a bit over the top. But at 11pm, when a friend and I ordered food delivery and rang reception to let him know, he snapped, “Do you realise what time it is? Do not call me again.” The tone was disgusting. That night, we found my friend’s pillows were wet and smelled of sweat, and the sheets were stained and disgusting. The food was excellent the next morning, but the owner was rude again when my friend asked for more cereal. He gave him a strange, grumpy look and then handed over a massive bowl, which felt pretty passive-aggressive. I left my key on the hallway counter because Jerry was nowhere around. Later, I came back for the iPhone charger I’d left in the room. He said the room was “trashed,” that there was food everywhere, a burn hole in the sheet that would cost €50 to replace, and stains on the bed. He also said Jerry had to hire a cleaner. I apologised, but explained that any room problems had been there before we arrived. That was true. He then said, “I don't want an apology I want my €50,” and refused to return my charger unless I paid. I would have paid if we’d caused the damage, but I wasn’t responsible for him failing to notice issues before our stay. He later changed his story, saying we’d cut a hole in the mattress cover instead. Neither version was true. When I arranged for a family member to call later, Jerry said three or four times that he did and didn’t have the charger. When told he’d get his money if he returned it, he said “okay.” Asked why he’d said he didn’t have it, he replied, “well I do.” Ridiculous behaviour from a B&B owner. Avoid at all costs. I have no idea why he has to scam people for more money to keep the place going. Stayed July 2014.

The woman who looked after us was delightful, always smiling, and went out of her way to make sure we had what we needed. Nothing was too much trouble. She was exceptional, and her service makes me want to come back!

Train station’s just around the corner, and the hop-on bus stop is up the road, so the location is really central. The building’s old and a little crooked, but that gives it plenty of charm. We were welcomed so warmly and the service was very friendly. Thanks a lot!

The staff were really friendly and helpful, and breakfast was good. The train station is nearby, though there’s no free parking. My room was very small, and the house itself is old.

The staff were so thoughtful and we had a wonderful stay. If you’re visiting Cork, I’d highly recommend number 48.
