Spoon and the Stars Hostel

The office lady was very nice and explained there was a problem with the hot water, but there wasn’t any hot water at all, so we couldn’t shower. We had a large private room with vintage furniture and a comfortable bed. When we came down for breakfast in the morning, the kitchen facilities were dirty.

We stayed in room #7, with a huge comfortable bed, a kitchenette, and our own toilet and shower. There was plenty to choose from at breakfast. The hostel felt welcoming, and it’s near the bus station. Drogheda is a lovely place to visit for its history and walks, and Barlow's Railway Tavern is just up the street, perfect for a pint.

The room had quirky furniture, including toilet chairs, and some interesting antiques, but six flies were there when we arrived. On the second day, I asked the cleaner for fly spray, and she kindly treated the room. Even then, I didn’t feel very clean, and I didn’t sleep well. There was also little light and no air conditioning. The cleaner and kitchen maid were kind, and the place is close to the bus terminal. My husband was charged 240 euros for two nights in a double room. After we came back from a wedding at 11pm, we couldn’t get the door open because the access code had been changed during the afternoon while we were out. I’d expected it to be changed in the morning. At 120 euros a night, I wouldn’t stay again because of the hygiene and lack of light and air conditioning. I’m hoping we can get part of the payment back.

The beds were warm and comfy, and the showers were hot. Breakfast was great, with fresh orange juice and lots of lovely teas. The hostel has thoughtful little touches for guests, and the whole place has amazing energy. It’s warm, cosy, and well equipped, even with earplugs, hair dryers, and blankets to snuggle under in the sitting room. Everyone was kind, accommodating, and friendly. I can’t say enough good things about our stay. Five stars, and we’d definitely return!
