Backpackers D1 Hostel

The staff were nice, but I’d save the €45 and stay somewhere else. The place needs a serious renovation: things were broken, creaky, or tarnished, and the rooms were tiny. The bed wasn’t really a bed, just a wooden box with a VERY THIN mat. The TV looked like it was from the 80s and didn’t work. The shower had only one setting, hot enough to burn your skin, and the temperature dial was broken.

The staff were helpful, the linen was clean, and for the price it was just about OK. But the room was damp and musty, the ill-fitting doors and windows let in a lot of road noise, especially with the road being dug up. The bed was extremely uncomfortable and needed at least a new mattress. One bed actually fell apart, and I had to replace the slats in the night. I’d only stay again as a last-resort bed if I were going to an event.

I don’t usually leave such a low rating, but I want people to know how horrible the experience was. I paid 25€ per night with no conditions, then spent the whole night in a room where water dripped from the ceiling. The bathroom felt medieval, and the staff didn’t seem to care about any of it. I think the conditions may be why they aren’t even registered on Hostelworld.

The good points were the friendly staff and the location next to the historic centre, though the staff couldn’t actually help with anything. The so-called private ensuite room felt like a converted hostel room, with just 1 electric socket. Facilities were badly neglected, basic necessities were missing, the old bathroom fittings were dirty and needed replacing, the furniture was in poor shape, and the TV didn’t work. The walls were paper thin, and the door lock didn’t feel very sturdy. Very poor value for money, even though Dublin itself is certainly worth a visit.
