The service from the friendly staff was great, the buffet breakfast was good, and the entrance and staircase are lovely. The rooms, though, were awful: tiny and cramped, with poor quality furnishings. Our room cost around 650 euro a night and absolutely wasn’t worth it. The bar is badly designed and looks like a train station cafeteria. I should have booked the Merrion Hotel, which I’m told is better, just a bit further away. I don’t understand why that fund crowd paid something like 250 million euro to buy this place and plan to spend another 50 million refurbishing it. Too many luxury old hotels tack on horrible wings with cheap-looking, overpriced rooms. What a shame.

Cian at reception was unbelievably kind and accommodating. The room was small, but had enough space for my wife and me, and the updated bathroom was clean. The hotel is beautiful, with a unique history, and in a great spot for walking around Dublin. It was a marvelous stay, and if I return to the city I can’t imagine staying anywhere else. Definitely worth the splurge.

We came for a birthday and had a brilliant afternoon tea, easily the best in Dublin. The tea selection is beyond impressive, and they make all the drinks expertly, especially the delicious matcha and mocha. The food was out of this world. They keep the menu fresh with treats like banana bread and éclairs, which were the two best things, while keeping the sandwiches classic, no brioche nonsense, and the scones fluffy. You can refill the sandwiches as you like, so it’s great value. Service was outstanding, with refills and attentive care throughout. They also kindly brought a small dessert plate and candle for the birthday. A very special place to celebrate milestones.

The staff really made our wonderful couple of hours of afternoon tea at the Shelbourne. Alex was there whenever we needed a fresh pot, and even offered to take some photos. She was so natural and courteous, a masterclass in customer service. The food was beautiful and the tea selection excellent. I hope she sees this!

The staff are the real luxury here. The concierge got us last-minute reservations at Chapter One and Liath when other places were saying they were fully booked for weeks. The doormen remember your name after just one interaction. You overlook green parkland on one side, and on the other you’re within walking distance of Grafton Street, Trinity College, the National Gallery and the best of Georgian Dublin. Temple Bar is a few minutes away on foot, and you can take a taxi anywhere else worth going in the city. Fabulous hotel, literally impossible to beat.
