St Martin de Porres

Mary offered us tea, showed us to our room, and immediately asked what time we wanted breakfast. She called me by my last name and said, “hello nice to meet you,” but after that there wasn’t much conversation. She didn’t ask where we’d come from or what our plans were, and didn’t suggest anywhere to eat. Then she disappeared. We waited about 20 minutes because we didn’t know where she was, as I wanted to ask about the Sligo museum. When I finally spoke to her, she talked to me with the door half closed and seemed eager to get away. She never smiled, and we didn’t feel welcome in her home. I’d been excited to try a B&B and experience Irish hospitality. Mary was our first B&B host in Ireland and our first interaction, so the way she treated us really upset me. I can’t see another reason for it besides me being BLACK, or my husband being WHITE and us being in an interracial marriage. We knew she wasn’t a fair representation of Ireland. The other B&Bs we visited were amazing and made us feel so welcome. People in Ireland were shocked when I told them about this. The room was clean and breakfast was delicious, but Mary made everything awkward and uncomfortable. I’ll tell everyone NOT to stay here. It wasn’t even my first choice, the other B&B had to cancel. So thank you, Mary, for treating me and my husband so poorly.
