We left and found somewhere else to stay after a really upsetting arrival at Cullintra House. The owner first said we were too early and couldn't check in until 5pm. Once it was 5, she asked for voucher details from the travel agency. I showed her my printed confirmation with its code, but she said it wasn't enough and insisted on getting my credit card details and payment right away. I said I'd sign in to my account to look for the voucher information, but she followed me around the property continuing to ask for my card. When I tried calling the agency, she pointed out that its office was already closed. I told her I wasn't giving her my card details because they were held by the booking company, and the argument became heated. My friend didn't trust that our things would be left alone if we went sightseeing, so I agreed we should leave. This was after the host had tried to sell us her paintings when we arrived. As we drove out, she blocked the driveway with a motorized scooter that had a flat tire and kept asking about the voucher or my card. She moved only when we said we were going out to dinner temporarily. I was pregnant, and she knew that when we arrived. The way we were treated felt unacceptable and threatening. Later I found Google reviews describing similar treatment, which made me question why this place was still an approved B&B in Ireland. I would not recommend it at all.

Getting up early to climb the hill behind Cullintra House and see the prehistoric cairn was a highlight, thanks to Patricia Cantlon's suggestion. She was sociable and made us a lovely breakfast. Our room looked out over the daffodil-lined drive, and the 300-year-old house has a wonderful atmosphere. It sits in beautiful rolling countryside, far from everything. A distinctive, thoroughly rural Irish experience.

I've traveled all over the world since my stay here ages ago, and Cullintra is still my favourite place. Hotels aren't for me. I prefer being at home with my own bed, animals, books, and cooking, but I'm really looking forward to returning very soon.

The quiet was lovely, even though New Ross is only 15 minutes away and Wexford town about 30. In New Ross we ate fish and chips from the 'Happy Plaice' by the river. I spent two weeks here while renovating my house, and it was very dog friendly. My room had a quirky feel and some beautiful antiques. The shared room was magical, with its round windows reminding me of Hobbiton. Patricia is an artist, and I loved her paintings. We'd have a quick chat when I got back each evening, and I enjoyed hearing her stories about growing up there.

Cullintra is a really special place, and Patricia was a wonderful host. We loved staying there and will definitely return.
