Corralea Court

The room was clean and the location central. That’s about all the praise I’ve got. The front door was shut very early, so coming and going through the bar didn’t feel like much of a welcome. Breakfast was a mess. I had to ask twice for some of what I’d ordered and still didn’t get it. My porridge came without a spoon, and there was no fruit or yogurt to go with it as promised, or even sugar on the table. The food was only okay and the service poor. The bar was alright, but some taps were out and nobody changed them. A security guard in what looked like riot gear stomped around in the otherwise very quiet bar, which made it hard to relax.

We booked for our anniversary and asked about a table with flowers and candles. They called back to say flowers weren’t possible but candles and table ornaments were, so we agreed. When we arrived, there was nothing nice on the table, no candles or anything. We ordered steak with half-and-half chips and mash. One plate came without mash or mushrooms, which staff brought after we asked. The steaks were cooked just right, one medium and one well done, but both were bland. The knives were blunt, and no one checked on us until ten minutes after we’d finished. The cheesecake had some flavor, but it wasn’t anything like cheesecakes I’ve had elsewhere and wasn’t very good. The place was chilly and seemed understaffed. A front-of-house manager would help. The men’s toilet had a broken hand dryer and no paper towels. I asked a staff member to refill them, but half an hour later, when we were leaving, it was still empty. Disappointing.

My dad and his partner were so unhappy with their stay that they left after one night instead of staying for the two nights I’d booked as a birthday gift. I definitely wouldn’t recommend it, and would give zero stars if I could. Their first room had no working heating. They were moved to another directly above the archway beside the main bar and function room, where loud music kept them awake until nearly 3am. After that, the door used by guests, the band, and staff kept slamming every few minutes until after 4am. Why keep a room there when the disturbance is so bad? I’d guess there have been complaints before. At checkout, staff asked why they were leaving a night early. When they explained the noise, nobody apologized, offered another room, or offered a credit for a future stay.

The dinner was the one bad part. It looked okay, though nothing special, but not long afterward my partner and I had to rush back to our room to use the toilet. Maybe something was wrong with it, perhaps it wasn’t fresh or had been microwaved. There were a few other diners and I wonder if they had the same experience. We stayed one night using a Groupon. The room and bed were nice, and unlike what I’d read in other reviews, we didn’t hear any noise. The shower could be better. Staff were friendly and polite, and breakfast was lovely. In general it’s a good place to stay, just change the chef.
