It’s a well-known older hotel in a convenient spot on Ranjit Avenue in Amritsar. The spacious rooms and good buffet breakfast make it a handy base for exploring the city’s food.

We spent four nights at MK hotel and loved it. The building is older, but the bathrooms and decor have been updated, and the elegant decor and spacious rooms stood out. It’s popular for weddings and events. Both restaurants are excellent, especially the breakfast area, which is elegant, spacious, and has high ceilings. Staff were polite, courteous, and responsive. Many have been with the hotel for years, which suggests it’s a good place to work. The housekeeping team was the best I’ve experienced, prompt and fuss-free. The breakfast restaurant’s staff were great too, as were the senior staff Mr Rajpal Singh and Mr Tilak Raj at the evening restaurant, the singer with the velvet voice who sang soft romantic tracks over dinner, the doorman, reception staff, and bellboy Mr Pavan. They were all professional, the sort of details well-travelled guests appreciate. Shops and restaurants are within a walk of 1 km, and there’s a mini mart nearby. The one downside wasn’t the hotel’s fault: very loud, penetrating music, apparently from the college grounds across the main road, possibly a concert. It lasted from dusk until 10:30 pm on a Saturday and made sleep impossible before an early start. Public noise at night isn’t acceptable anymore in developed nations, and regulators need to take it seriously. I’d return if we visit Amritsar again.

The service was poor even though the hotel itself is good. The room landline didn’t work, so whenever we wanted to order something, we had to go to reception. Pathetic service.

The hotel is old, but lots of people in Amritsar still trust it. In the rooms, the thermostats couldn’t be controlled, and the buffet breakfast was meant to start at 7 but wasn’t ready until 8. Restaurant staff were busy talking on their cellphones instead of attending to guests. Management should take note and watch the CCTV they’ve installed.
