Beverly Hotel

We cut our stay from two nights to one because of the problems, especially with an infant in tow. I wouldn't call this hotel family-friendly or suitable for children. The front desk staff were rude and unprofessional, as if they were doing us a favor, and the booking-site photos didn't match the rooms we found. I can't understand its 3-star rating and would advise families to stay elsewhere. We booked directly after seeing the 3-star listing on booking sites. We reserved a suite and an executive room, explaining that we were travelling with an infant and needed both rooms on the same floor, preferably next to each other. Staff assured us they could arrange that. On arrival, though, the rooms were on different floors. They first said nothing could be done. Only after a long discussion, when I decided to cancel and find another hotel, did they offer two rooms on one floor, both suites. Since we'd booked one suite and one executive room, I had to pay extra for the change. One suite had an air conditioner that didn't work, an unclean bed and a cockroach on the sofa. An electrician came after I called the front desk, checked the AC and left without explanation. Staff later said it was working, which clearly wasn't true, and were reluctant to recognize the problem even when I asked them to inspect it themselves. They eventually offered an executive room on a different floor. We had to take it, but it smelled of smoke and the bathtub was dirty. That room also had a broken phone, and there were multiple problems overall, including the AC, smoke smell, dirty bathroom and pests. Breakfast the next morning was very disappointing: just idly, vada, bread, butter, jam and coffee. The idly was dry and unappetizing. When we complained, the front desk replied rudely that this was all they could offer. For a hotel calling itself 3-star, the service and quality were unacceptable.

I spent five nights here on a business trip, and wouldn't recommend it, especially to female travellers. The front desk managers were extremely rude, with poor manners and courtesy, speaking as though hosting guests were a favor. What they said crossed a line, even though the other problems alone might have left me at three stars. WiFi barely worked, at about 1mbps. In the room, the phone didn't work, the lamps above it wouldn't switch on, and the paint needed attention. The shower also needs work, it was rusty and dirty.

I liked the place and was satisfied with the service. It's a cozy option for both staying and dining, with a spacious dining hall that seats 60. The buffet lunch had a variety of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes, prepared nicely and easy on the stomach. I'd recommend visiting with family or friends for a meal or a stay.

The staff were a real strong point: cordial, polite and helpful throughout, and I enjoyed the restaurant. Food was decent and housekeeping did an okay job. But at Beverly Hotel, Chennai, the room upkeep was poor and needs an overhaul. The interiors feel dated, and maintenance problems affected comfort. Better maintenance and refurbishment could make a big difference. For now, it's an average stay mainly carried by the staff and decent food.
