Britto served us most of the time in the dining room and was a pleasure to talk with, so calm and unflappable. Teresa at the front desk was friendly and made sure we were comfortable, while manager Shailesh was always nearby attending to the little things. The hotel has just one restaurant, with a fairly small menu, but we enjoyed the local dishes we tried. Chef Ramalingam was very engaging with diners. We’d met him during our 2003 stay, and it was lovely to see him again. You can ask for something off-menu, and they’ll make it if they can. This is a small, cosy Taj property with lovely gardens and lawns. The old colonial building still has its quaint charm, including real fireplaces. Thanks to the team, and I hope to return soon.

Drivers work long hours bringing guests safely to the hotel, and they deserve clean, decent facilities. The washroom provided for drivers was poorly maintained and unpleasant to use. It’s extremely cramped, making it hard to stand properly or take a comfortable bath. Water also fails to drain, so it pools on the floor and drivers have to bathe in dirty water. For a four-star property with high room rates, these basic arrangements fall short. I’m very disappointed and ask management to improve the washroom facilities to match the hotel’s standards and image.

The garden is lovely, and the staff are exceptionally kind, going out of their way to help. At night they lit the fireplace in our room and left a hot water bottle for the bed, a great touch. The restaurant was okay. Most rooms have few windows and no view. The location is convenient to reach from different directions, though there isn’t a direct walking route; the station is only about a 10-minute walk away. It’s also a 10-minute walk to the main town hub. The hotel occupies a 150-year-old building that once served as the priory of the 175-year-old All Saints Church, which is stunning.

The food safety practices impressed us. The standards were excellent, and they follow the required safety steps carefully. Chef Mr Ramalingam leads the effort himself. He told us they swab the palms of the waiters and restaurant staff and do other food checks more often than required. It’s an excellent place if you don’t mind the cost. Rooms have recently been modified, so they’re smaller, but the authentic elegance remains and there’s still enough space. Each room has its own layout and architecture, and during a quieter period you may be able to choose after viewing. We came for lunch after 23 years and were overcome by old memories. Unlike some other Taj hotels, the place was still just as lovable, and we booked a day’s stay before leaving Nilgiris. The overall atmosphere and mood haven’t changed. The staff are lovely and always a pleasure to talk to. We met chef Mr Ramalingam again after 23 years; he once made us special South Indian dishes when they weren’t on the menu, which now has a good balance. Ms Theresa was wonderful. The day before our stay she showed us some rooms, and although our choice wasn’t available, she managed to get it for us the next day. Her warmth reminded us we were at Taj. Mr Britto served dinner and then drinks at the bar. His gentle, steady way of speaking is soothing, and he went out of his way to customize our cocktails. Manager Mr Shailesh also went around the tables to hear feedback and listen. I hope the place stays this way.

We had a memorable trip, with comfortable rooms and a peaceful atmosphere. The team were warm, helpful, and smiling throughout. The New Year celebration was especially fun, with great music, delicious food, and thoughtful organization. Gateway Coonoor also has excellent views. Highly recommended for a Coonoor visit.
