The payment follow-up after checkout was the most disappointing part. I’d cleared nearly 2000 rupees at reception before leaving early the next morning for Bagdogra Airport, then got a call while traveling saying another bill for around 900 rupees was still due. I asked them to WhatsApp the bill and QR code and said I’d pay once I reached the airport, since network service in the hills was poor. They sent them but kept calling; on one call I couldn’t hear anything, and on the third I asked them to let me reach the airport or the plains for better internet. They insisted on knowing when I’d arrive and wanted payment then. After three nights and paying about 30,000 rupees, I wasn’t going to steal 900. That felt really unprofessional for a hotel that calls itself four-star. There were other service problems. One night our food order didn’t arrive for over an hour, and when I called, they said they’d forgotten it. It came only after we ordered again. At dinner another day, the waiter put our order on the table and left without serving it. When I asked another waiter, “Do you guys not serve food here?”, he casually said they couldn’t because there were lots of customers. They should add one or two staff during busy season. At check-in, someone wrapped a Summit scarf around our necks while talking on the phone the whole time, which also felt unprofessional. The location is almost good, though there are better places to stay. The room and space don’t justify the high price, and there was no air conditioning, which can sometimes be needed even in the cold. Really, really disappointing.

We’ve had wonderful stays with Summit Oakden, part of the Summit Group, whenever we’ve visited Darjeeling or Sikkim. It’s only a short walk from The Chowrasta Mall Road in Darjeet. The team is warm and welcoming, offers suggestions, and takes extra care of you. Rooms are centrally headed, and the Kanchenjunga view from the terrace is awesome. The food is quite delicious, the property is well maintained, and the room rate isn’t too expensive. You’ll surely see this brand grow soon.

The restaurant food and service were good. Our premium room, though, seemed no different from a regular one, and the room itself was very average. It was dirty, especially the bathroom floor and walls. For the price we paid, we felt we could have found the same kind of hotel for half as much. Room service wasn’t good either; we had to remind them two or three times, probably because there weren’t enough people.

The quiet location in a no-vehicle zone was a plus, under a kilometer from Mall Road, and the room had a good view. But over our five days, the heater stopped working and had to be replaced three times. We also had no bathroom water twice and no hot water once. For the first three days housekeeping called to ask if we wanted the room cleaned; on day four there was no call and no cleaning, so we had to ask reception just to refill the water bottle and wash a glass. Dinner was only okay, with very few choices, and it was expensive for food whose taste didn’t justify the price. Summit Oakden Resort was an okay stay, but felt like a two-star hotel charging five-star prices. We had booked breakfast and dinner.

The Darjeeling travel arrangements were well planned, with timely pickups, clean vehicles, and an itinerary that made exploring easy. The hotel stay was comfortable and well maintained, and we had great views. Staff were polite, responsive, and handled everything without hassle. Both the accommodation and travel management made for a relaxing, memorable trip. I’d recommend this setup to anyone visiting.
