Superview Waterfall

From Rumtek, you can see Gangtok stretching across the hill, and at night all the lights sparkling over the landscape make for an especially lovely view. It’s a homely place with a good environment. I’d personally suggest staying here for a week.

The hosts made us feel completely at home, and we got to enjoy the warm Sikkimese hospitality. Deepak, his brother and wife run the homestay with support from Ashique and his wife Sharmila. The hosts were gracious, the staff efficient and cheerful, and the food was great and cooked to order. Deepak was great to talk to, shared lots of local knowledge, suggested things to see around Rumtek and elsewhere in the state, and arranged our tour to Nathu La pass and Tsomgo Lake. I’d highly recommend this place if you want a local experience, peace, quiet, fresh clean air, stream sounds and nature around you. I made memories for a lifetime and hope to return. The house has three levels, with most guest rooms on the first level opening onto a large living and dining room where people can meet. Its style mixes Sikkimese touches with funk, which gives it an unusual appeal. From the windows, you can see Gangtok on the opposite hill, lit up at night. During our stay the windows were open, so we heard the stream, crickets and other insects. Some insects flew in uninvited and made themselves at home, which bothered a few guests. The resident dogs Julie and Steffi, their three puppies, and a neighbour’s cat added cheer. There’s a garden and, as the name suggests, two little waterfalls nearby. I saw one but didn’t have time to find the other. It’s about five minutes from the main road, with steps down to a freshwater stream and then up another set to the house. Rumtek monastery is about an hour’s very scenic walk away. Along the route are green mountain scenery, Buddhist prayer flags, swaying paddy fields and the Jawahar Lal Nehru botanical gardens, with their exotic flowers. A different trail from the homestay goes through forest to tribal villages, where you can see people working in step fields and chat with friendly locals. Sikkimese people love their plants, and the gardens and balconies around the houses are full of flowers among all that green. Gangtok is about a 40 minute drive away. Taxis are available outside the homestay, either reserved or shared, and the regular flow of taxis makes the journey there and back manageable. I stayed from 2 to 5 June 2017 and couldn’t have found a better base for exploring the beautiful, peaceful landscapes around Rumtek.

The staff were well behaved from the start to the end, and they made sure we had a good, special stay. Rumtek monastery adds a spiritual touch to the experience. This is a peaceful place in the arms of nature and the mountains, far removed from fast, noisy, polluted city life. If you want a quiet break, this could be the spot.

A wonderful resort for a reset. The setting, with mountains, monastery, waterfall, stream, woods and a beautiful wild garden, is lovely, and the views are awesome. The food was good and the staff friendly. Great stay and hospitality!
