Indeco Leisure Hotels

I got to visit during Pongal, which made the trip especially memorable. The resort feels tucked away in the greenery and is steeped in history. It’s such a lovely, fun place for a vacation, and I’d absolutely recommend it for a scenic getaway.

The museum displays and the boards explaining the history are genuinely interesting. Beyond that, I’m still not sure what to make of the place. It combines a cultural education experience, a museum of colonial and local artefacts, and a hotel and spa, and large school groups are to be expected. The buffet meals are expensive, with no light snack option. The staff are meant to be local, but that didn’t seem to be the case, and I saw no sign of the local Muslim village being integrated into the complex. It’s an odd place, and I can’t tell whether it really merits its eco credentials. We found it pricey.

The rooms are unusual, comfortable, well equipped, and filled with eclectic artefacts, as are the buildings around the site. The setting fits the hotel's eco spirit: after driving away from the noise, smells, and smoke outside, it feels like entering a green oasis. We came for a short family break, and the fresh South Indian breakfast was a good part of the experience. The place is best appreciated in person, though there are things to improve. The lunch choices were very limited. If that’s normal, a set lunch and dinner menu would make sense. Breakfast buffet items need labels for guests who don’t know South Indian food. One morning, a large wedding group joined breakfast and gathered around the buffet, turning it into an obstacle course. Staff could also smile and greet guests more often, since that’s part of the experience. Guided walks at a few times during the day would be useful for guests who want to explore the many things to see on their own, but would also appreciate some guidance. Hiring local people is a great idea, and India needs more of it. But the driver accommodation we heard about was mosquito infested, with only a hard plank to sleep on. Lunch and breakfast were just one rice dish. Indeco really needs to do better by drivers. Basic beds and mosquito nets shouldn’t hurt the margins. I also wonder what the staff accommodation is like. This brought my rating down to three stars.

I spent a weekend here with my best friend and honestly didn’t want to leave. The staff were helpful, courteous, and accommodating, which is rare for a premium property. If you want to experience the essence of Kumbakonam, Tamilnadu’s history, and genuine hospitality, Indeco Swamimalai is the place. A memorable, life changing stay in a divine location.
