The quiet setting away from the city let us avoid the noise and bustle, making for a peaceful vacation. We were surrounded by mountains, trees and river streams, and the mornings were lovely with cool breezes and birdsong. We could enjoy garden apples in the sun too. Staying at Amir Homestay added so much to our Ladakh experience. Salim Bhai and his loving family made it feel like a home away from home.

I got to bathe in a local stream where spring water meets water from the glaciers, which felt like a real taste of local life. On the walk to the river with our welcoming, friendly host, we also tried sea buckthorns. I even picked apples from the garden for the first time, which made the stay extra special. We had a wonderful time at Amir homestay, with delicious home cooked food made using fresh vegetables from the garden. Our host was great company on the morning walk. It was an authentic stay, nothing fancy, and with very little dependence on the modern lifestyle we’re used to.

For cleanliness, bear in mind this is a homestay and a little rustic. It wasn’t a problem for us. The family’s hospitality was the best we experienced in Ladakh. We’d struggled to find a place to stay when we stepped into the beautiful garden of Salim and his family. His mother greeted us while leading the cow around to graze. There was also a baby cow, four sheep and a cat. They brought us tasty tea and snacks right away, and we had a lovely conversation with Salim, who’s kind and knowledgeable. His English was flawless, and his good humour made talking with him fun. His mother was always smiling and welcoming. She picked carrots from the garden for us to snack on, and made a delicious dinner with fresh vegetables as well as breakfast. When we left at 6am for the morning puja, she surprised us with tea.

It’s a farmhouse where you can spend time with sheep, cows, ducks, hens and cats. Since they grow food on the property, you get a real farm to table experience. Ask for gur gur chai and traditional meat dishes like Rgyuma or mutton thuppa for dinner. Salim bhai and Nasir bhai can help with your travel itinerary.
