The garden and willow trees make the outside of Hotel Galaxy pleasant, and there’s a central lobby with a small library of books and guides. It’s a good place for bikers, with comfortable rooms and facilities, but there’s no lift. Some people in our group struggled with the stairs to the second floor in the thin air. It’s off Karzu road, about a 12-minute walk from Leh main market or the crossroads. The food was good, though we waited quite a while for more Puris and for an omelette. If you’re staying a couple of days to acclimatise in Leh, ask for a ground-floor room.

The hotel is near the circuit house in Leh, about a 10-minute walk from the market. The people are as nice as the place. Bittu, a sweet, cheerful little boy who works here with his uncle, made an impression on me. I felt he should be at school instead of working. The service and rooms are good, there’s a Geyser in every room, and they clean daily. The outdoor setting is lovely too.

This was the dirtiest hotel. The kitchen was filthy, the food stale, the towels reused, and the bed linen unwashed. Just looking at the food made me feel like throwing up, so I didn’t even touch it. You could get infected staying here.
