Hotel New India

Right in the heart of dongri, with Sandhurst Road and Masjid station nearby. It's affordable, and you can bargain over the room price. The staff were nice and courteous.

The staff were genuinely helpful. They passed on a call from my son in the USA when I had no phone, helped me book another hotel, and the free breakfast was much appreciated. The room was clean enough, though very small. The TV didn't work, but after several attempts to fix it they moved me to a different room. I had booked three days through Expedia for a total of $33, but was charged $55 for what seemed to be an upgrade I hadn't agreed to. They also wouldn't take my Visa, so I had to pay cash, which was a real inconvenience. The site should make the card issue clear. In my opinion, it's an OK place to spend a night if you're moving on the next day.

The shared toilets were poorly maintained: there were no toilet seats or hangers, the water pressure was very low, and the doors had to be forced shut. The hotel is cheap, but not so cheap that basic toilet upkeep should be missing. The area smelled bad and the neighborhood wasn't very nice. I'd only book here for urgent work in South Mumbai if I didn't need to spend the whole day in the room.

The staff stole my belongings and acted as if they hadn't. The place was unhygienic, and during monsoon season water leaked into the room. If you do stay here, be careful with your belongings. I wouldn't stay again.
