Munroe Days Homestay

The wildlife was incredible. In just two days we saw fish, snakes, cows, goats, chickens, ducks, kites, kingfishers, a strange aquatic rodent, feral cats, and more kinds of insects than I could count. A giant spider and some lizards even appeared on the cabin floor. Luckily, there was a high quality mosquito net over the bed to keep the critters off us at night. Munroe Days is a peaceful little homestay in a beautiful rural stretch of Kerala's backwaters, run by a hospitable young family with a cute three-year-old son. Two small, detached cabins sit on either side of the family home. We stayed during monsoon season, and a fierce storm and downpour knocked out the power on our first night. Renjith kindly brought over a battery-powered light, though we declined because we'd brought flashlights. Even with the rain, thunder, lightning and occasional outages, our cabin was cozy and tranquil, a welcome break from the nearby towns. In the morning, Renjith took us in his canoe around the backwaters. Talking with him taught us a lot about local history, his life and India in general. We had wonderful food for breakfast, lunch and dinner each day. Home-cooked meals are by far the best way to try local Keralan cuisine, and they were worth every rupee. Staying with Renjith and his lovely family on Munroe Island was unforgettable. Highly recommend it if you need a peaceful recharge.
