Zostel Pahalgam

The trails behind the hostel lead to lovely valley views, and the natural surroundings are a real treat if you enjoy being outdoors. Forest, the hostel dog, was adorable and seemed to keep an eye on everyone. Monica and Basharat make the place feel like a family home, and the activities, game nights, and bonfires made it easy to meet people. I left with a bunch of new friends.

We stayed three nights in June 2025, and the forest setting was beautiful while still being easy to find right on the main road. Check-in was simple, and our four-bed dorm was carefully looked after, down to the little details. The cozy common and dining area had good books and a sofa you could happily sit on for hours. We had a fun game night with other travelers, and the food was tasty too. The kindness of Basharat Bhai and Monika really made the stay. We arrived a month after the Pahalgam attack, when some places were still closed, and Basharat patiently helped us figure out where to go. I’m not much of a trekker, but he offered to guide us to Margan top and on the four lakes trek. He and Monika came along, and we had a great time learning about the area and the route. It was such a warm gesture, and I’m grateful to them. The staff were friendly as well. We played cricket with them one evening, and they helped us rent a bike through their contacts. They made us feel included throughout. I was sorry I couldn’t stay longer. Pahalgam visitors should stay here for the hospitality and kindness of the Kashmiri people. I’ll be back and hope to spend more time here.

We booked one night and stayed several more. The hosts were so warm and welcoming that even the extra days didn’t feel like enough. The rooms were heated, the view was great, and the whole place had a lovely feel. I met lots of people and we played games every night. I’m already planning to come back. That pine forest right behind the property is gorgeous. We spent a few days strolling there, and it was lovely to return after visiting the various valleys. My mom and I had four wonderful nights at Zostel Pahalgam. We booked a third-floor room with a private bathroom and a balcony facing the forest. It was huge, with lots of windows, and we loved watching shepherds walk by with their sheep while having hot coffee. The bathroom was spacious too, with hot water, windows, and a fan for ventilation. There was a TV for rainy days, and the bed warmer was a game changer, especially for my mom. I don’t think the bunk beds have one. Nights were quiet except for pigeons occasionally dancing on the roof, which didn’t bother us. When we asked to add an extra night, they were easy to reach and quick to communicate. Monika and Bhahsharat were wonderful hosts. One evening we asked for fresh sheets, and they changed them themselves because they were short staffed. They were always available and helpful with places to visit and recommendations. We didn’t join game nights, but they were welcoming to everyone. Little things, like letting us try something new, sharing lettuce they had grown, and checking in on us, made us feel at home. The whole staff was helpful. The food was delicious. We ate breakfast and dinner there and usually went out for lunch, and I looked forward to the meals. Try the daal tadka with aloo pyaaz paratha or chicken kanti, which was spicy and so good. Compliments to the cook! The cafe and eating area is thoughtfully set up, with room to spend time together or have some time to yourself. It’s a lovely spot for games and friendly conversation. Thanks to Monika, Bhahsharat, and all the staff for having us.
