Mateus Boutique Hotel

Our superior room was fine for the hotel's category, but the standard room we were moved to the next day was deplorable. We’d booked a weekend through a tour operator and only found out after paying that the superior room was reserved for the first night alone. The manager blamed the tour operator and offered either another stay in Candolim or a checkout. We’d come to visit Panjim, and the room had already been paid for. When we said we might leave, she said she’d refund us because she “didn’t need our money.” She was rude and arrogant. I lived in Portugal for several years and expected the same warmth and politeness I knew there from a hotel proud of its heritage. Instead, I found the treatment of non-local tourists increasingly negligent. It seems local tourists are given preference as international visitors become secondary and irrelevant. Even basic English wasn’t understood by some staff. Cleaning was superficial, especially in the bathrooms. Totally disappointing.

The staff were friendly and easy to approach, and we had a comfortable stay. The beds were good, the shower had hot water, and there was complimentary tea and coffee to serve yourself in the lobby. This was my second visit after several years, and we were upgraded to a lovely suite.

Staff were helpful, and the location is great. Just be aware the standard room is on the ground floor beside the wooden stairs, so there’s constant creaking and noise from outside.

A calm, pleasant place to stay, with a lovely atmosphere and an aesthetic feel. Great location too. It’s a nice spot to relax and enjoy your stay.
