If negative stars were possible, I'd give this place minus 5. I want to warn people, especially women traveling alone, not to stay here unless there's really no other option. The people running it repeatedly lied, overcharged, took money when they got the chance, and gave terrible service. They ignored basic requests they didn't want to deal with, saying it "costs", while pretending they would fix things. They were evasive and acted as if they hadn't understood what had been agreed or discussed. They didn't help with luggage and seemed indifferent to my experience. The longer I stayed, the clearer it became that they didn't care about anything but money. When I arrived, I was told they'd provide a car. Once we got there, they asked me for 800 rupees to move a couple of suitcases from Ramanasramam accomodation, something they hadn't mentioned beforehand. Later, in a sincere and personal conversation, manager Mano admitted he'd taken advantage of me and said "next time he wouldn't do it again". He could barely look me in the eye during my stay, and when he did, he seemed guilty and ashamed. Several times he sent random men who weren't suited to the job to communicate with me because he didn't want to face an uncomfortable conversation. My shower stopped working completely, even though I'd been asking them to repair it for weeks, and I had to ask neighbors if I could shower at their place. The AC had similar problems when it was very hot outside. The internet cut out most days. Mano said he was calling the company to fix it, but did nothing. He left most of my questions in our WhatsApp chat unanswered. The cleaning staff needed close supervision and detailed instructions to do even a mediocre job. There was old food left on the table when I first entered the apartment. A friend of mine, who was kind and warm to them and kept excusing their shady behavior, was asked twice by the submanager for money supposedly to buy new clothes. He gave him money once, then figured it out and didn't do so again. During the full moon, loud families were noisy after 1am and as early as 4am. When I asked Mano to tell them to be quieter and more respectful, he said nothing and only tried to make excuses for them, and himself. Eventually, I handled whatever I could myself, and many matters were resolved that way. The worst part was how they treated women. Staying there alone made me feel unwelcome and, by the end, threatened. I had to yell at them to leave me undisturbed until I left a few days later. They were pressuring me to leave the next day because of Mano's irresponsible, unclear communication, so I involved the police. After my call, everyone suddenly fled. Perhaps things will improve, but not through their own choice. Several friends and neighbors who stayed more than a week had similar experiences. The flat's equipment was mostly very old, dirty, and poorly working, including the AC. They didn't keep the apartment in good condition. The rugs were very old and falling apart, there was mold along the wall edges, and the walls were stained and peeling. They're supposedly renovating now, but the management is still the same, so I wouldn't send anyone I know there. I've shared the main points of my experience so you can judge for yourself. It's nice to have a good place to stay where people look after you somewhere visitors come for spiritual sincerety. All the best.
The rooftop was a highlight, with a lovely view of Arunachela and a great atmosphere at night. The apartments had plenty of useful equipment, and the bed was spacious and comfortable. The AC worked well, and the window screens were good. Manager Mamo was straightforward and kept his word, while SundaraMurti the house go-for was consistently helpful and upbeat. Sangita also did her best with the cleaning. The free washer and rooftop clotheslines were handy, and RPS is near several good restaurants and about a 10-minute walk from Ramana Ashram. The apartment itself felt pretty grim, though. The cheap rugs were stained, the walls needed painting, and ants were all over the kitchen table. One night a rat-like shrew showed up in the bathroom. The Wi-Fi worked on G2 (managers), but nowhere else. Both the bathroom and bedroom doors were warped and difficult to shut. We don't plan to return.
The building looks nice from outside, but it wasn't maintained well. There was mold across the walls and carpets, and a nest of roaches in a kitchen cabinet. I raised the mold issue with the manager several times and got no response. Upkeep was sorely lacking, and the place wasn't worth the price. The manager put off needed maintenance for two weeks, then said he wouldn't do it, leaving me to find somewhere else just as high season was starting. Wi-Fi went out almost every day. He blamed the provider, though the problem was actually the old modem. Power outages were frequent, with no backup generator for lights or fans. At checkout, the owner demanded cash even though the rental agreement had arranged a wire transfer. As a foreigner, I paid an 8% ATM withdrawal fee, which the owner refused to reimburse. The manager also wouldn't give me change for the final rent, so I had to overpay. I don't think this place should be legally allowed to rent to tenants.
The rooms are good, with a hall and kitchen, a bedroom, and a spacious bathroom with grip flooring. Wi-Fi and TV channels were good, though this morning the signal was weak and we had to use mobile data. A couple of changes would help. The bedroom window panes are clear, see-through glass; frosted glass would let us leave the curtains open for daylight and reduce unnecessary electricity use. Tea, coffee, and sugar sachets could be provided, and breakfast as well.
Worst experience. It’s a non-AC room, with an AC unit there just for show, and the maintenance is terrible. If you tell them the AC isn't working, then...
