In addition to Hotel Edda the 'capital of the east' has its own international airport and a host of local attractions. Among them are Hallormsstaður, Iceland's biggest forest, the extinct Mount Snæfell volcano, Atlavík's sandy cove and the beautiful Lagarfljot river which, according to myth, is home to one terrific but shy monster, a distant relative of the one in Loch Ness in Scotland.

The staff were excellent, the parking was convenient, and the location is great. The room, though, was small and quite basic. The shower drain didn't work properly, so the whole bathroom floor flooded whenever we showered. We arrived late after a long, tiring day and just wanted to shower and sleep, so we didn't report it to the front desk. We stayed at seven other hotels around the country during our Ring Road trip, and this was the most expensive one. Breakfast was a letdown, with few food choices. For the price of one night, we had expected much more.

The staff were welcoming and helpful, and the location made it easy to explore the area. Our room was well equipped and comfortable, a nice place to relax after sightseeing. Hotel Valaskjálf was clean, too. A really pleasant stay with good value and Icelandic hospitality. Highly recommended!

The staff were nice and the rooms clean, but the stay itself was rubbish, two stars at best. Our travel agent booked it, now ex-agent. The room was tiny, with a tiny, substandard bathroom. The curtains didn't block the light, which is essential in summer, and the hot water smelled of sulphur. The restaurant was ordinary and pricey for what they offered. Avoid room 112. Its windows face the car park with no privacy, so the blinds had to stay drawn all the time.

I don't see how the room can be called small, or the stairs described as many. It's very spacious, as you can see in the picture, and only 15 stairs up to the room.
