Skaftafell Hotel

The hiking trails starting right by the parking lot were the main reason we liked this place. With the hills blocking the hotel lights, you don't need to walk far for darker skies, and the paths are well marked. Bring a flashlight or headlamp at night. The view of the Milky Way was incredible, though the hotel and the new restaurant and gas station across the road are lit very brightly, and semi trucks park there with their lights pointed at the hotel, which isn't great for seeing the Northern lights. The location is great, but the hotel itself is basic and has no soundproofing. We could hear people in the next rooms and hallway. Radiator heating was a plus since we could turn it off and avoid the uncomfortable warmth we had at other Iceland hotels. Our shower drain clogged and flooded the bathroom floor, and the floor drain didn't work either. Maintenance came right away, were friendly and efficient, and had everything cleaned and fixed before our next shower. Food at the restaurant was pretty good, with more variety than at many hotels and good vegetarian options, but it was expensive. Breakfast was adequate, and there's also food across the street.

We only stayed one night. The hotel felt a bit dated, though it was very clean and the staff were lovely. Breakfast had a good range of choices, and you could request a night call for the Aurora.

We slept well thanks to a comfortable bed, even though the room was quite basic and we could hear other guests coming and going. The location was perfect, and we'd stay again. The hotel had a lot of warm, inviting touches, and the restaurant served excellent food with breathtaking views.

The room was clean and cozy, with a lovely glacier view, and the beds were comfortable. The staff were helpful and kind, too. I really enjoyed staying here, and both breakfast and dinner were delicious. Just keep in mind that dinner is pricey. My friend had Arctic char, I had chicken legs, and we both had dessert. Our bill came to nearly $200 USD.
