Ásólfsskáli Cottage

The stars were breathtaking, and the place was really quiet. The morning view was amazing, and the best boy ever came over to play with you. Definitely coming back.

The highlight was the canyon behind the cottage, with a trail that climbs up the cliffs. Make time to explore it. The cottage also makes a great base for southern Iceland and has a hot tub that's easy to fill and drain. It's well stocked, though there's only a small fridge and no oven. You do get a cooktop, microwave, and outdoor propane grill.

We ended up needing an extra night after strong winds cancelled our ferry and island excursions to the Westman Islands. Katrin was very accommodating and helped us extend our stay. The cottage was quiet, clean, comfortable, and beautifully situated. Skogafoss and the Skogar museum are about 20 minutes away, and the Black Sand Beach is around 45 minutes away. There’s a great dinner spot next door at Skalakot. We originally planned two nights here, and would absolutely stay again if we return to Iceland.

We liked the cottage enough to stay one night, then book it again for the return leg of our trip. It’s quiet, with fields, birds, and horses around it, plus mountains and a waterfall in the background. The cottage was clean and very well equipped, and the hot tub was a lovely extra. We got a much better price by booking directly than through booking.com, so it’s worth calling to ask.
