Cozy Apartment by the Sea

The photos are real, but they don't make clear that this is an underground garage. We arrived in the evening after getting through complicated directions. The owner was there, though he seemed irritated by the late hour, 9 PM, and didn't do much to make us feel welcome. The place had a double bed, a single bed, a table, and a kitchenette. A tiny bathroom had a small window looking into the bedroom. There was no window to the outside, and the iron door took a lot of force to open. The sheets felt cold and nearly damp from the humidity, while the linens were rough like sandpaper. A spiral staircase goes up to a small, enclosed ground-floor terrace, which was fenced and locked. There were also prohibition signs all over the walls. In all my time in Sicily, I've never met someone so unwelcoming, thankfully. I don't understand how Booking.com lets out somewhere so run-down, with reviews that are incredibly positive but untrue. I hope this helps other tourists.

The village was lovely and quiet, and the owner even showed us around it. Inside, though, the apartment is essentially a windowless garage. We arrived in the late afternoon and he met us with the keys. The entrance, hidden behind a curtain, is through a garage, which left us quite perplexed. The setup matched the photos: a large bed, a small bed, table and chairs, armchairs, a kitchen, and a bathroom with one window facing the bedroom and kitchen. A spiral staircase leads to a small terrace shared with another apartment.

Pozzillo is a lovely little hamlet, only a few kilometers from Acireale's center and the area's main sights. Our apartment was charming too, with a private pool and direct access to the sea along a striking cliff. Davide Saverio was kind and helpful, met all our requests, and took us to see some of the most beautiful spots. It felt like a little corner of paradise. Highly recommended.
